Minghao Wu is a London-based artist working across installation, digital media, and moving image. His practice investigates the entanglements between materiality, transformation, and ecological hybridity, constructing speculative ecosystems that challenge conventional boundaries of identity, biology, and perception.
Drawing from Chinese folklore, queer ecology, and morphogenic processes, Wu creates hybrid organisms that inhabit unstable thresholds between the organic and the spectral. Hair—both a cultural symbol of desire and a biomaterial archive—features prominently in his work, intertwining with metal, gelatin, and digital modeling to form speculative life forms. These creatures emerge within immersive environments where decay, metamorphosis, and interspecies entanglement blur the distinctions between life and afterlife, self and other, body and landscape.
Morphogenic ecology, as an experimental framework within Wu’s practice, examines the fluid negotiations between nonhuman agencies, evolutionary instability, and folkloric imaginaries. It explores how organic and spectral matter coalesce into new morphologies, how ecological cycles resist linear progression, and how folklore encodes shifting relations between species and landscape. By staging encounters between material transformation and mythic continuity, Wu’s work proposes an alternative ecological sensibility—one in which organisms, environments, and narratives perpetually reshape one another, eroding fixed taxonomies in favor of emergent, relational formations.
